Virtual Reality is one the easiest and simplest way to offer best practices to patients, suffering with FEARS, Anxiety, Lack of Mindfulness and many other things the VR can help with, The Flying Psychotherapist and Multicultural CBT-DBT, LLC works to make it accessible to mental health professionals. VR allows the patient to interact with environments in between in vivo and imaginal exposure, improving the flow and outcomes of exposure therapy. Virtual Reality Therapy (VRT) combined with biofeedback is proven highly effective in helping patients overcome phobias with a success rate exceeding 90%. Treatment typically lasts 12-16 weeks requiring just one 45 minute weekly session.
Neurofeedback is brain exercise. We observe your brain in action from moment to moment by monitoring your brain waves. We show you your brain activity and we help you to change it by rewarding shifts toward a more appropriate and stable brain state. It is a gradual learning process.
Neurofeedback works by ‘holding a mirror up to the brain to give it feedback on how well it is working. In this way the brain can literally be ‘trained’ to work better. The idea that the brain can change comes from Neuroplasticity. The learning method comes from the concept of ‘classical conditioning’, discovered many years ago, which states that unconscious behavior can be learned by rewarding it. The feedback is delivered to the brain via the eyes and ears through video games and movies. When the brain is working well our technology causes the video to change, for example, to go faster, louder, softer, smaller, bigger, etc. As the client relaxes, the brain ‘tunes in’ to this feedback and adjusts in response. It is this positive reinforcement in the form of sensory feedback that trains the brain to correct any irregular behavior it may have been exhibiting. Our technology measures brain activity by observing tiny electrical signals (known as brain waves) to assess how well the brain is performing.
WHAT IS NEUROFEEDBACK?
Neurofeedback is brain exercise. Also called “EEG Biofeedback”, Neurofeedback is based on the reading of the brain’s natural electrical activity with the use of an ElectroEncephaloGram, or EEG. By rewarding desirable patterns and inhibiting undesirable ones, we promote and strengthen the brain’s ability to self-regulate and perform optimally. Neurofeedback differs from medication in that it treats the root of an issue rather than simply alleviating the symptoms, and does so without the side effects. It is a non-invasive treatment that works toward optimal brain functioning without the use of medication.
THE NEUROFEEDBACK SESSION
Each 45 minute training session (30 minutes of actual Neurofeedback) will take place in the caring hands of expert practitioners. The session will always begin in the same way with your Practitioner asking you about how you are feeling and if you have any feedback from the session before. They will be particularly interested in your sleep patterns as these indicate how well the training protocol suits your individual needs. You will then sit in a comfortable chair, and because we need to measure your brainwaves electrode sensors will be attached to your head. This involves cleaning the scalp with an alcohol swab and attaching the sensors with a special paste. Throughout your session, your Practitioner will check how you are feeling and will adjust the training plan as necessary. At the end of the session the sensors will be removed, your Practitioner will make notes, and you will be free to get on with your normal day.
HOW EFFECTIVE IS BRAIN TESTING, WHAT KIND OF RESULTS CAN I EXPECT?
Studies have repeatedly shown Neurofeedback to be effective in a wide variety of clinical applications as well as for peak performance. In cases where Neurofeedback is an alternative to medication, Neurofeedback brain training is not only safer than medication as there are no dangerous side effects, the benefits of the treatment also remain after the program has finished. With medication you are simply controlling the symptoms, not solving the problem.
Neurofeedback brain training needs you to be motivated and committed to the training program. It doesn’t work for everyone however, and the only way to find out if it works or not is to try it.
HOW SOON WILL I FEEL THE BENEFITS OF NEUROFEEDBACK?
Clients often feel different after just the first session, although it will take multiple sessions for the new ways of working to be fully learned by the brain. Just as different people learn at different rates, so do different brains, and some have more to learn than others. In Neurofeedback training, each session builds upon the previous ones to accumulate the benefits. We ask that you commit to 20 sessions; this will deliver significant, lasting improvements for most clients. If your condition is particularly serious you may wish to continue beyond 20 sessions, but this is something you would discuss with your Neurofeedback Practitioner towards the end of your first course.
Before we can design a custom training program to maximize success, we need to make an initial assessment of your situation and understand your symptoms. This initial consultation will take place with one of our Neurofeedback Practitioners or a licensed staff therapist.
